Solar Eclipse Coming to Begur! (and early Summer discount)
Something Rather Spectacular is Coming to the Costa Brava This August
On the evening of Wednesday 12th August 2026, the skies above Begur are going to do something quite extraordinary.
A total solar eclipse (the first to cross Spain in over 120 years) will sweep across the Iberian Peninsula. The path of totality runs a little further south, but the Costa Brava will experience something very close to the real thing: around 95 to 99% of the sun covered. The afternoon light will turn strange and amber. Stars will appear in the daytime sky. The temperature will drop. Birds will stop singing.
If you have never seen a near total eclipse, it is one of those moments you never really forget.
When to Look
The eclipse begins in the early evening and reaches its maximum at around 8:30pm local time. In August in Begur that means warm air, long golden light and a beautiful summer evening just getting going. No early alarm required. Pour yourself something cold and head outside.
Where to Watch From
Begur is wonderfully placed for this. A few spots worth considering:
- Begur Castle ruins: 360 degree views across the Costa Brava, and a pretty special place to be at the best of times.
- The camins de ronda coastal paths: our favourite road that runs from Sa Riera to Aigua Freda along the beautiful rugged coastline.
- Platja de Pals: a wide open beach with a big sky and plenty of room.
- Cap de Creus: worth the drive for the landscape alone.
And of course both villas have terraces and gardens with clear sky views. If you would rather watch with a glass of wine from the comfort of your own space, that works perfectly well too.
One Important Thing: Your Eyes
Please do look after them. Even at 99% coverage, the sliver of sun that remains is bright enough to cause serious damage if you look directly at it without protection. You will need proper ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses. Not sunglasses, not camera filters, not anything improvised.
They are inexpensive and widely available online. Order a few pairs before you travel. They make a lovely thing to share with whoever you end up watching alongside.
A nice one for children: punch a small hole in a piece of card, hold it up to the sun and let the light project onto a surface behind it. You will see a perfect little crescent as the eclipse progresses. Simple, safe and great fun.
